About the Artists
Widely regarded as one of the best-known hammered dulcimer players in the world and a well-regarded Appalachian style fiddler, Ken Kolodner has toured for many years with some of the top players in the U.S. Called “a world class instrumentalist” by Sing Out!, Kolodner has more than 20 recordings.

Mary Lynn Michal received a master’s degree from The Eastman School of Music and played French Horn with the Durham Symphony for over 20 years. After discovering the hammered dulcimer and studying with Sue Wilson and Ken Kolodner, Michal has become one of the most sought-after teachers and performers of the hammered dulcimer in the U.S.

“Michal and Kolodner finish each other’s musical sentences... One of the delights of the record is in the pacing of it all, starting with a bang and then retreating to a more contemplative space for a spell before erupting again with joyous energy.” - Dulcimer Player News

About the Tunes

Swingin’ with the Eighties (Graham Townsend, Canada) We kick things off with Canadian fiddle legend Graham Townsend’s wonderful swing tune. We are quite sure he never imagined his tune would be covered by two hammered dulcimer players.

Out from the Shadows (Ken Kolodner & Mary Lynn Michal) Co-written by Ken and Mary Lynn (ML) in memory of their dear friend, Adie Carlyle. The tune’s construction is primarily Am and D/Dm, with some of Adie’s ISH thrown in for fun. ISH is a term emblematic of “anything goes” and “no worries” when it comes to playing a tune.

Coleman’s March (Trad, US) Mary Lynn and Ken love jamming this tune with friends and performing it in concerts.

Promenade à Monaco (André Brunet, Quebec) André Brunet is one of the best-known Quebecois fiddlers. ML and Ken have fond memories of teaching and jamming this tune via zoom during the pandemic in April 2021.

A Sandbridge Lullaby (Ken Kolodner) Ken wrote this tune as a tribute to The Sandbridge Hammered Dulcimer Retreat and the nurturing environment that has sprung from the shared experiences there. Mary Lynn began her journey Out from the Shadows in large part due to the support of the Sandbridge community.

The Water is Wide (Trad, Scotland) This well-known Scottish folk song has been adopted as a standard of the American songbook. Our interpretation features two hammered dulcimers.

Cití Na gCumann (Trad, Ireland) This title translated from Gaelic as “Kitty, My Darling.”

Mouth of the Tobique (Trad, Quebec)/Frenchie’s Reel (Ward Allen and Mel Lavigne) Mouth of the Tobique is a jam staple in our hammered dulcimer world. Frenchie’s Reel holds the distinction of being a tune that has spent time on the “no fly list” due to ML’s incessant repetition.

Will Ye Gang to Kelvingrove (Trad, Scotland) This is an all-time favorite AND a stellar example

of Ken’s non-traditional, rich chord progression, and is one of the first tunes that involved input from Mary Lynn crafting the backup.

Wayfaring Stranger (Trad, US) This hauntingly beautiful standard features the interplay between Mary Lynn’s solo hammered dulcimer and Elke’s viola.

Caspian Lake (Ken Kolodner) Although previously recorded by many hammered dulcimer players, this favorite tune is enhanced by ML’s ideas to create a new arrangement for two hammered dulcimers and viola.

North Carolina Breakdown (Arthur Smith) With this jam favorite, Mary Lynn pays tribute to her family and friends in her home state of North Carolina.

Amelia (Bob McQuillen) This well-loved waltz is one of Mary Lynn’s absolute favorites to perform.
